Here is an article from the Kansas City Business Journal written by Krista Klaus, about a new mexican restaurant opening up in the Country Club Plaza, Zócalo Mexican Cuisine and Tequileria.
Country Club Plaza lands Zócalo Mexican Cuisine and Tequileria
Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza has been without a Mexican restaurant since Baja 600 closed in the summer, but the dry spell will end in the spring.
Zócalo Mexican Cuisine and Tequileria is under construction and will take the former Mi Cocina space at 48th and Jefferson streets, Zócalo spokesman Will Gregory said.
Owner Chris Ridler, who owns Sol Cantina in Midtown, is opening the restaurant and bar concept.
Zócalo will offer “an enticing blend of tradition and innovation that defies the normal conception of Mexican dining,” according to the Country Club Plaza’s website.
The new restaurant will include an open-air patio and indoor lounge, as well as main and private dining areas. The bar menu will include handcrafted margaritas and tequila flights.
Zócalo will feature live music and will serve lunch and dinner daily, as well as Saturday and Sunday brunch.
Becky Goodman of Block & Co. Inc. negotiated the deal with Plaza owner Highwoods Properties Inc. (NYSE: HIW) on behalf of Ridler.

The Rieger Hotel Grill & Exchange Retains Van Osdol & Magruder, The Biggest Little Law Firm® in Kansas City, to Manage Business Success
Thursday, March 10th, 2011
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Biggest Little Law Firm® in Kansas City, Van Osdol & Magruder, P.C., was retained by The Rieger (www.theriegerkc.com), located at 1924 Main Street, to manage its entity formation, real estate lease, purchase of assets and liquor license.
The hotel was originally opened in 1915 by Alexander Rieger, the son of Jacob Rieger, who was the founder of J. Rieger & Co. Whiskey. Ryan Maybee and Howard Hanna, co-owners of the Rieger, said that “We have worked very hard to maintain the historical memory of The Rieger Hotel. The level of quality and care in the food and the restaurant are all part of the culture and our commitment to cultivating the urban core. We hope everyone will take advantage of this new restaurant. Reservations can be made by calling The Rieger at 816.471.2177.”

Maybee added that the liquor license was one of the several corporate issues that they had Van Osdol & Magruder P.C. handle prior to their opening on December 18, 2010. “We would have started a lot sooner with Van Osdol & Magruder,” said Maybee. “The negotiation of assets with the previous owner and bank consumed more time than we originally expected. The liquor license was only part of the challenge, but we are very excited to have the restaurant and bar serving Kansas City,” said Maybee, who also owns Manifesto, the downstairs bar.
Shawn Stogsdill, a partner at Van Osdol & Magruder, P.C., said “My advice to any business owner is to start working as early as possible on liquor licenses. This process involves a long checklist and can take longer than expected.”
Stogsdill commented that Van Osdol & Magruder is very excited to have The Rieger Hotel in Kansas City and wants to thank Ryan and Howard for their investment in the downtown area. “Congratulations Ryan and Howard for an extremely successful opening. We hope to see The Rieger prosper and grow in Kansas City for many years to come,” said Stogsdill.
Van Osdol & Magruder, P.C., is located in Downtown Kansas City, Mo. Trademarked as The Biggest Little Law Firm® in Kansas City, the firm focuses on maximizing value for its clients while remaining mindful of legal expenses. The firm’s lawyers have a wide range of skills and backgrounds and concentrate on being part of successful outcomes for individuals, businesses and their owners and employees and top-notch nonprofit organizations.

Schlotzsky’s Deli Restaurants in Kansas City Kick Off $15M Remodeling Drive
Friday, March 4th, 2011
Posted By: Shawn Stogsdill
According to an article from the Kansas City Business Journal, four Kansas City-area Schlotzsky’s Deli restaurants are showed off their makeovers Tuesday, kicking off a $15 million chain-wide campaign to reimage and remodel the restaurants.

The nationwide “Lotz Better” initiative is expected to affect the entire 350-restaurant U.S. franchise system by the end of the year. It includes a new, vibrant color scheme and a circle theme in keeping with the chain’s signature round sandwiches, as well as playful slogans and contemporary furniture and artwork.
The restaurants also changed up the service model so employees hand-deliver food to tables. Three locations — those in Kansas City, Mission and Overland Park — now will sell Cinnabon, as well. One in Olathe will not.
“We are honored that Kansas City was chosen as the market to jump-start this exciting initiative,” Mike Fleming, owner of the Schlotzsky’s restaurants in Mission and Kansas City, said in a release.
The company already has signed multi-unit deals with new and current franchisees based on the new look and co-branding with Cinnabon, Schlotzsky’s President Kelly Roddy said in the release.
The company announced last year that it hopes to add 16 locations in the Kansas City metro area within five years. All new construction will be in keeping with the new image, Roddy said.
Schlotzsky’s hopes to nearly double its U.S. locations by 2015 — to between 600 and 700 — and Kansas City is one of the markets that the chain considers to be untapped.
To honor the unveiling, local Schlotzsky’s restaurants are offering their signature sandwich, The Original, for $1.99 on Tuesday and holding a drawing for free Schlotzsky’s for a year.
Schlotzsky’s, based in Austin, Texas, is owned by Focus Brands Inc., which is the franchisor and operator of more than 3,300 Carvel, Cinnabon, Schlotzsky’s, Moe’s Southwest Grill and Auntie Anne’s locations, and Seattle’s Best Coffee on military bases and in international markets.

The Kansas City Star Announces: St. Louis sushi shop makes the jump to KC
Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
Posted By: Bob Beachy, president of Van Osdol & Magruder
Here is an article from the Kansas City Star, written by Joyce Smith, about a new tenant opening up in the Power & Light District. The Drunken Fish a St. Louis sushi chain will open at 5 p.m. today and have a lunch opening tomorrow.
St. Louis sushi shop makes the jump to KC
One of St. Louis’ favorite sushi operations, the Drunken Fish, hopes to open its new downtown location this week.
The lounge and restaurant — which is shooting for a 5 p.m. opening Wednesday and a lunch opening Thursday — is in the former Bice space at the corner of 14th and Main streets in the Power & Light District.

Drunken Fish owner Munsok So said the district had long courted him, but he didn’t get hooked until he saw the district for himself.
“It’s such a cool and unique part of Kansas City, a hip downtown, and I wanted to bring something to add to that,” So said. “We offer a big selection, not just sushi, but in signature cocktails.”
Menu items include sashimi (thinly sliced raw seafood) and sushi dishes, marinated black cod, lobster spring rolls, spiced baked mussels, sukiyaki, salads and lettuce wraps.
There’s also a “St. Louis roll.” But will there be a Kansas City roll, maybe with some barbecue?
“I don’t think we are … yet,” So said with a laugh.
The Drunken Fish, which opened in mid-2003, has three locations in the St. Louis area.
